What is outpatient drug rehab?

Outpatient Drug Rehab

Decisions concerning drug rehab are difficult – and the question most people ask first is no different – Should the rehab be inpatient or outpatient? Outpatient drug rehab is a type of rehabilitation that does not require a patient to live at the facility where treatment is provided. This type of drug rehab can vary greatly on a spectrum and is ideal for certain patients with certain situations. When deciding whether to attend outpatient or inpatient drug rehab, a number of considerations should be made. And if a person decides on outpatient drug rehab, they should carefully consider the differences between programs to select the program that is right for him or her to get and stay clean.

Outpatient drug rehab centers are ideal for a select group of people. These people can attend the treatment that outpatient drug rehabilitation provides during the day, and return home at night and not give in to temptation to use drugs and alcohol at that time. Successful patients -those who can resist this temptation - are generally those with very strong, supportive networks. Most times, these networks are families who care deeply about a person and their success in a rehabilitation program. Not only do these families care for the patient, but take responsibility over part of his outcome. They will monitor a patient to ensure he or she does not start using again, and provide him or her necessary support to go through with resisting the temptation to use drugs. A further qualification for ideal outpatient drug rehab patients is that patients are not severely addicted to drugs. While detoxing, these people may be uncomfortable, but not debilitated. They do not need medical professionals to help with their symptoms and can operate normally without the use of drugs or alcohol.

If a person meets the above description of an ideal candidate for outpatient drug rehab, they may still want to consider inpatient rehab. Outpatient rehab does offer some benefits in comparison. Namely, patients are not removed from one of the most motivating reason to get clean – to both continue to receive and return the love of a family. Outpatient drug rehab centers are also less expensive than inpatient centers, though with insurance the costs can often equal out. Finally, outpatient drug centers can allow for a person to still pursue other responsibilities, if absolutely necessary and possible.

Outpatient rehab centers can differ greatly in their approach to overcoming addiction. On one end of the spectrum are outpatient rehab centers that will create an individualized plan with a patient one of the first times they meet. From there on out, it is the responsibility of an individual to follow through with his or her plan, with little guidance from the rehab center. On the other end of the spectrum, an outpatient rehab center can have daily meetings that last all day and consist of meetings, support groups and counseling. Choosing the right outpatient rehab program is a very important decision. An oft-quoted piece of advice is to not choose the easiest rehab treatment plan for you – choose the one that will work!
