Drug Rehab Centers

Entering a drug rehab center is a very important decision in a person's life. It can be the start of reconstructing a past life, or starting completely fresh on life again. For those suffering from drug addiction and those whom love them there are often many questions concerning the different types of drug rehab centers that are available. Which one will most help me or my loved one to get and stay clean? The answer is one that must be made on an individual basis, but there are common choices for what a person is looking for in drug rehab centers. Three main considerations include the level of drug therapy, readiness to treat coinciding disorders and inpatient or outpatient programs.

Because drug addiction can chemically alter the brain, withdrawal symptoms can often be very stressful and painful for addicts. Advancements in medical science have provided drugs that help to curb these replacement effects while easing addiction. These drugs are currently only available to specific drug addictions, namely opiate-based addictions. For those who suffer from addictions to drugs with medicines that can ease withdrawal, 'replacement therapy' is an option. Different drug rehab centers have different levels of treatment therapy. Depending on the type of rehabilitation that the center offers, the spectrum can range from no drug therapy to a sole focus on drug replacement therapy. Debates over the necessity of replacement therapy are still very prevalent. Your opinion on using replacement therapy should be the most important when choosing which drug rehab center appeals to you or a loved one.

Drug addicts often come to drug rehab centers with coinciding addictions or disorders. It is important that the drug rehab center you or a loved one attends is one that is prepared to handle any possible coinciding disorders you know of or can foresee. The list of coinciding addictions or disorders is long, but many are not uncommon amongst those addicted who become addicted to drugs. Mental disorders leading to drug use, or as a result from prolonged drug use, including psychosis can be treated at many facilities. Other drug rehab centers focus in dealing with coinciding eating disorders. Ultimately, because separate addictions and disorders are often interrelated, many drug addictions cannot be fully treated without treating all coinciding disorders. When considering drug rehab centers ensure potential facilities are prepared to handle the needs of the potential patient.

A final main consideration of drug rehab centers is whether they are an inpatient or outpatient facility. Inpatient drug facilities are those where a patient stays at the center for the duration of the stay – boarding and meals are provided. Outpatient facilities mostly have patients attend sessions or drug therapy during the day and return home at night. Serious addictions often require inpatient facilities. However, those with very strong support systems and large responsibilities may sometimes consider outpatient drug rehab centers. The decision should be based on the needs of what will be effective in ensuring a person can both get and remain clean.
