Christian Rehab

Drug and/or alcohol rehabilitation can be an exceptionally difficult task. The pain and stress that comes from withdrawal and the ever-present desire to start using alcohol or drugs again presents incredible challenges to recovering addicts. Traditional treatment can be and often is effective. Yet many people have found that a rehabilitation environment that focuses not only on the physical and social components to drug addiction, but also on the spiritual components of drug addiction can be very helpful. Christian rehab is a way to overcome alcohol and/or drug addiction through the establishment or renewal of a person's faith in Christianity. An increasing number of rehab centers are offering Christian rehab and they can be very similar to one another, or very different.

Most Christian rehab centers follow the common three-component approach to rehabilitation. This component starts with detoxification, followed by counseling and ends with aftercare. Christian rehab centers supplement traditional therapy along all steps of the way with Christian components – whether it is regular sermons, readings or group-based dialogue. The incorporation of spiritual components seeks to explain the deeper reasons behind addiction and the subsequent application of Christian principles to surmount it. As mentioned, many Christian rehab centers incorporate regular biblical readings throughout detoxification as well as counseling to focus the process on reclaiming oneself for Jesus. Both individual and group therapy occur during the counseling component of rehab, with much the same focus of identifying triggers of addiction and supporting others in their question to stop using alcohol and/or drugs. The basis and undertones of most of these conversations will differ from traditional therapy in that they take place within the framework of Christianity. For many, Christian rehab centers provides a spiritual component some may find missing in traditional therapy.

Christian rehab centers often differ concerning their approach to the use of drug replacement therapy for those suffering from specific narcotic addictions. Some centers have deemed the use of drug therapy as going against their Christian beliefs, while others see no issues with reconciling drug use with their Christian faith. Many Christian rehab centers make their position clear on the website by stating whether or not 'in addition to spiritual guidance, they will pursue physical, emotional and medicinal paths to recovery.' The decision to undergo drug therapy is a personal one and it is important to choose a rehab center that administers practices that coincide with your own beliefs and goals.

The decision to undergo traditional rehabilitation or Christian rehab is a very important and personal one. Those who have lost connection with their previous Christian faith, or those who have always longed for a deeper spiritual meaning are great candidates for Christian rehab. Those who disagree with the Christian faith or anticipate being very skeptical may want to focus solely on rehabilitation and may be better suited with a traditional rehab center. In doing so they may avoid negative reactions to rehabilitation, allowing focusing solely on the goals of getting clean. In the end, those who attend Christian rehab should be those who want to gain or regain a deep faith in Christianity. And for those who do wish to do so, Christian rehab can be much more effective in recovering from drug and/or alcohol addictions than traditional rehabilitation.
